How to Sell My Forklift Truck: Tips

Tip #1 - Know What Your Forklift Is Worth

Just like any other vehicle, there are many factors that will determine what your forklift is worth. These include:

Capacity: Forklifts with larger capacities sell for more than those with smaller ones.

Type of Fuel: Electric and diesel models usually sell for more than Propane (LPG) models

Type of Tires: Speciality tires that are in good condition such as non-marking, foam-filled or razor sipping will increase your price. If your tires need to be replaced then that could lower your price.

Hydraulics: If you have extra hydraulic functions that accommodate attachments, then your forklift will be worth more.

Mast Size: You can get a higher price if your mast is taller or is specialized

Extra Features and Accessories: Having extra features such as outdoor cabs, non-standard accessories, and other special attachments will increase your forklift's value.

Higher capacities, special tires, and extra accessories can add to the price of your forklift

In addition to the above, the following will also affect the price of your forklift:

  • The overall condition of the lift: The better the condition, the higher the price.

  • The year: Newer models will give you a higher price.

  • The number of hours that it has been used: Forklifts with fewer hours will get a higher price.

  • Supply and demand: If there are more buyers than forklifts available for your particular model then you can get a higher price, but the opposite is also true. If there are lots of lifts available and fewer buyers interested then you may get less.

Tip #2 - Look at the Competition

Take a look at ads for other forklifts for sale in your area to get an idea about the type of competition you are up against and the prices being charged for models that are similar in age and condition to yours. Taking these precautionary steps will help you set a competitive price.

Tip #3 - Take Lots of Great Pictures

You've heard the expression "a picture is worth a thousand words" and that is so true especially when you are trying to sell your forklift. Whether you are selling it online privately or if you are selling it to a dealership, pictures will help you make the sale.

If you are using an online site, upload as many pictures as the site will allow giving potential buyers a really good idea about what your forklift is like.

Pictures can also be a great asset if you are selling your forklift to a dealer. You can email potential dealers your pictures so they can make a better decision about whether they want to buy it from you and what price they are willing to pay.

Take lots of pictures from a distance, at different angles and up close of key areas of your forklift. Some key parts of your forklift that you can take close-ups of include:

  • The forks

  • The mast

  • The operator's seat and seatbelt

  • The serial number

  • The tires

Tip #4 - Write a Thorough Description

In addition to taking lots of great pictures, write up a complete description of your forklift that includes key features such as:

  • Make, year and model

  • Capacity

  • Fuel type

  • Types of tires

  • Any accessories or special features that your forklift includes.

You will need to include this information in any online ad that you post and you can also send it along with your pictures to any potential dealers.

If you are limited by the number of words that you can use online, make sure you include the most important features of your forklift and what sets it apart from your competition.

Tip #5 - Promote Your Forklift

If you want to sell your forklift faster, you might want to pay to promote it on the online site(s) that you are using such as Kijiji. The cost of promoting your ad will depend on the feature, city and category that you are posting in.

If others are promoting their ads as well then the price will be higher, however, if you are trying to sell your forklift fast, then you might decide that it is worth paying for this service.

Tip #6 - Sell Your Forklift to a Dealer

If you don’t want to take the time and go through the hassle of selling your forklift yourself, then contact a local dealer who buys used forklifts. This is a great option especially if you are also wanting to replace your forklift, as they will have options for you.
